Ingredients

Glass mug of red wine with orange slices sitting on table with white cloth and pinecone

  • 1 bottle of dry red wine (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, or Zinfandel recommended)

  • 1 cup bourbon

  • ½ cup of your favorite Corey's Sugar Shack NYS Pure Maple Syrup (adjust to taste)

  • 1 orange, sliced

  • 1 lemon, sliced

  • 1 apple, sliced

  • 3 cinnamon sticks

  • 3 whole cloves

  • 3 star anise

  • 1 tsp peppercorns

  • 2 bay leaves

Directions

  1. Slice the orange, lemon, and apple. Set aside. Measure the spices for easy assembly.

  2. In a large saucepan or pot, add the red wine, bourbon, maple syrup, and prepared fruit slices. Stir in the cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, peppercorns, and bay leaves.

  3. Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Do not let it boil. Once simmering, reduce to low heat and let the mulled wine cook for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  4. Strain the mulled wine to remove the spices and fruit.

  5. Pour into mugs or heatproof glasses. Garnish with a cinnamon stick, a slice of orange, or a star anise for a festive touch.

Notes

  • Use a good-quality dry red wine for the best flavor.

  • Adjust the sweetness by adding more maple syrup or try some of our Corey's Sugar Shack Maple Sugar!

  • Mulled wine can be made ahead of time and reheated gently before serving.
